Savvy wine buys: Au Bon Climat ‘00 Pinot Noir

The bearded, indomitable winemaker Jim Clendenen of ABC is probably the most visible personality in the Central California wine world. He has done lots of experimenting with the tricky Pinot Noir grape, and his various single vineyard examples of California Pinot have won numerous awards.

This generic blend, the least costly of all his Pinots, is made with 75 percent Pinot Noir, and 25 percent of the little used blending grape Mondeuse. The result is a round, robust wine that's great for anyone who likes to drink wine and not pay a premium price.

Available at Lee's Discount Liquor and Las Vegas Wine Company, $15.77.
