Health District will offer flu shots

The Clark County Health District will begin offering flu shots Monday to people who suffer from conditions for which the flu would cause serious complications.

The Health District has ordered 25,000 doses for the upcoming influenza season. Once the at-risk population has received shots, the remaining doses will be offered to the general public.

Those with insurance or those eligible for free vaccine through Medicare or Medicaid must present cards. Otherwise, the cost is $15 per dose.

The at-risk population includes people 65 years and older, children 6 to 23 months, residents of nursing homes, adults and children with chronic heart and lung conditions, children on long-term aspirin therapy and women who will be in their second or third trimester of pregnancy during the flu season.

Locations for shots: Ravenholt Public Health Center, 625 Shadow Lane; East Las Vegas Public Health Center, 560 N. Nellis Blvd.; Henderson Public Health Center, 129 W. Lake Mead Drive; and North Las Vegas Public Health Center, 1820 E. Lake Mead Blvd. Hours: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Soroptimists to host health fair

Soroptimist International of Greater Las Vegas, University Methodist Church and its Family Resource Center are sponsoring a Community Health Fair from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tuesday at University Methodist Church, 4412 S. Maryland Parkway.

The Health Fair will offer free cancer screening, free blood pressure checks and free mammograms. Also on hand will be the American Diabetes Association, Alzheimer's Association of Southern Nevada and many more organizations. There will also be Spanish-speaking translators on site.

Women over 40 will be given mammograms free through the mammo-van program. SIGLV is part of a worldwide organization for women in management and professions working through service projects to advance the human rights and status of women. Members will also be on hand volunteering the day of the event.

Seminar to focus on self-care

A six-month course focusing on self-care and optimal health from a scientific and spiritual perspective will kick off with a seminar from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Desert Shores Club House, 2500 Regatta Drive.

The "Brain Optimization Educational Odyssey" course was developed from the research of author and clinician Joel Robertson.

A special presentation will be held for course participants from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. For more information, call 396-8045.

BC plans meeting on preparedness

Boulder City will host a town hall meeting on emergency preparedness from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Parks and Recreation Gym, 900 Arizona St.

City personnel will explain the role they play in emergency situations and the responsibilities they undertake during a disaster, whether it is an accident or weather situation, an act of terrorism or a hazardous chemical spill.

They will answer questions regarding the plan the city has in place should an emergency arise, what residents should do in such situations and how homes can be prepared for emergency conditions.
