Casinos giving more to GOP

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Republican-related committees took in more than twice as much casino money as their Democratic counterparts, according to campaign finance reports.

The Republican committees received $90,320 from January to September compared with $37,270 for Democrats, according to reports filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission.

A committee to elect Republicans to the state House got $25,000 from Harrah's and $20,000 from Ameristar in a four-day span in June. There are no limits on such contributions, as there are on gifts to individual candidates.

Casinos are helping the GOP because they're upset with Democrats for trying to increase gambling taxes this year. A failed plan in the Legislature would have raised up to $100 million for schools.
