Letter: Put an end to intolerance
Friday, Oct. 4, 2002 | 9:44 a.m.
I've noticed a lot of blue signs proclaiming "Protect marriage, vote yes on Proposal 2" and I wonder exactly what part of marriage needs to be protected? The only answer I can think of is that marriage should be protected -- for heterosexuals only.
Reminds me of growing up in the South and reading signs such as, "No mixed marriages allowed," "Whites only drinking fountain," and "Whites only movie theaters."
If this proposal passes, then we are legalizing intolerance. We are saying that it is OK to discriminate against anyone who doesn't behave like we tell them to, doesn't think what we tell them to, or doesn't marry who we tell them to. I guess we haven't really changed that much, have we?
Call me a dreamer, but I believe that if we stop listening to the hate mongers and start listening to our hearts and consciences, then we can break this cycle of hatred, intolerance, bigotry and discrimination which continues to poison this country.
After all, God doesn't hate, people do. So it's up to us to put a stop to it.
