Trauma program seeking volunteers
The Trauma Intervention Program is seeking volunteers for a two-week training class Thursday through Oct. 20, on how to "break the news" to family members or friends who have been severely injured or have died.
Volunteers will be trained on things such as letting family know about children who have drowned in a backyard swimming pool, people who have been fatally stabbed or shot or it could be someone who has died of natural causes, and how to support them after the event.
For more information or to register for the class, call Marian Thomas at 452-2049.
Free screenings set at MountainView
MountainView Hospital's Northwest Las Vegas Family Health & Safety Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday outside the hospital in the main parking lot, 3100 N. Tenaya Way.
The event will have free health screenings including blood pressure, body fat, height and weight checks. Other screenings may be offered at a reduced cost.
Health information will be available on nutrition, exercise, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, women's health and more. Free car seat safety checks will be provided by the Safe Kids Coalition.
Call 233-5300.
Six-month course on self-care offered
A six-month course focusing on self-care and optimal health from a scientific and spiritual perspective will kick off with a seminar from 10:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Desert Shores Club House, 2500 Regatta Drive.
The "Brain Optimization Educational Odyssey" course was developed from the research of author and clinician, Joel Robertson. A special presentation will be held for course participants from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
For more information, call 396-8045.
Disaster information on UMC website
University Medical Center has a web-based system designed to make information available during a disaster.
The hospital can put up-to-the-second information on its website for use by the media and public. The service is part of a section on UMC's website that gives disaster information and instructions.
UMC's site can be found at www.umc-cares.org., and the disaster information is in the media section.
UMC can provide a demonstration of the technology, but since the site is "live," the demonstration would have to be done at the hospital to keep the public from becoming unnecessarily alarmed. For more information, call 383-2090.
