Trauma program seeking volunteers

The Trauma Intervention Program is seeking volunteers for a two-week training class Thursday through Oct. 20, on how to "break the news" to family members or friends who have been severely injured or have died.

Volunteers will be trained on things such as letting family know about children who have drowned in a backyard swimming pool, people who have been fatally stabbed or shot or it could be someone who has died of natural causes, and how to support them after the event.

For more information or to register for the class, call Marian Thomas at 452-2049.

Disaster information on UMC website

University Medical Center has a web-based system designed to make information available during a disaster.

The hospital can put up-to-the-second information on its website for use by the media and public. The service is part of a section on UMC's website that gives disaster information and instructions.

UMC's site can be found at www.umc-cares.org., and the disaster information is in the media section.

UMC can provide a demonstration of the technology, but since the site is "live," the demonstration would have to be done at the hospital to keep the public from becoming unnecessarily alarmed. For more information, call 383-2090.
