Double-decker buses to operate on Strip route

The Regional Transportation Commission will bring two new bus projects to Southern Nevada today, part of a month-long customer appreciation event.
The RTC's Citizens Area Transit service will unveil a double-decker bus that will run along the Strip from Wednesday through Oct. 9. The RTC hopes locals and visitors will enjoy the English-style bus, said RTC spokeswoman Ingrid Reisman.
But the bus also has a serious purpose, she said. The RTC will test the feasibility of using the bus on a regular basis.
Unlike the London buses, however, which are known for their firehouse-red color scheme, this one will be painted red, white and blue.
Riders who fill out a survey will receive half off their regular fare, making a Strip bus ride $1.
Riders on other bus routes can also get a good deal in October. The RTC will have a "Fun Bus," decorated in artwork created by area young people on transportation themes, running on various routes throughout the 39-route system.
The RTC and ATC, the management company that runs the system under contract with the government agency, will award lucky Fun Bus passengers various giveaways and coupons -- including tickets for a drawing for an all-expenses-paid vacation.
Reisman said the promotions are meant to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the system, which today carries 52 million people annually. She said the events are not meant to promote Question 10, a question on the fall ballot that asks voters to approve $2.7 billion in new funding for the RTC, mass transit and road construction work.
"We're looking for innovative ways to move as many people as possible along our busy transportation corridors," Reisman said.
