Letter: City, county are big water wasters
Thursday, May 2, 2002 | 8:48 a.m.
The largest water users and wasters in Las Vegas are the city and county governments, not the home owners. They feel that every street median and sidewalk must be made completely green. If they realized we lived in a desert, and made use of desert landscaping, we could all have plenty of water and lower taxes.
Trees should be used to provide shade where people walk. Sidewalks do not need a low bush every few feet. In some cases these bushes block the view of motorists when entering an intersection, so in addition to drinking much water, they are a safety hazard.
Street medians do not need trees, rocks would do a better job and use no water, and never die.
Until our government starts to save water, how can you expect any individual to be serious about saving water? Until we see reductions in water-wasting landscaping by local government, it is a sick joke to think the water company should take individuals to court to save water.
