Plea deal made over mail threats

A plea agreement has been reached between the government and a Las Vegas man accused of mailing letters that threatened the lives of public officials, including Nevada Sen. Harry Reid.

Milton Thomas Black, 62, plead guilty in U.S. District Court on Thursday to two counts of mailing a threatening communication, and the government agreed to drop three additional threatening communication charges.

Black, who will be sentenced on Sept. 13 by U.S. District Judge Philip Pro, could face a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.

Black pleaded guilty to mailing two letters in December addressed to Colorado Gov. Bill Owens. In one letter there was a threat made against Sen. Harry Reid, Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy and CNN host Larry King, according to a criminal complaint.

Black remains in federal custody without bail.
