Though set at opposite ends of the country, Broadway and Hollywood have occasionally been known to meet.
What's been tackled onstage has often played out on the silver screen.
So when the Performing Arts Society of Nevada presents "Broadway Meets the Movies" Saturday at Winchester Theater, expect to hear plenty of familiar favorites dating to the 1930s.
The four-part program delves into songs from 1930s movie musicals to Academy Award-winning Songs such as "You'll Never Know," "Mona Lisa" and "The Last Time I Saw Paris."
Baritone Gary Oakes, tenor Lou Garcia and vocal stylist Bonnie Graham will perform a lengthy repertoire of songs, which include "Lullaby of Broadway,""It's Only a Paper Moon," "The Way We Were" and "Hello Dolly," among others. All are local performers.
A tribute to the songwriters Rodgers and Hammerstein will end the production.
"We enjoy putting this type of show on because people know it," said Thomas Gallagher, who co-founded the Performing Arts Society of Nevada with John Meren nearly 12 years ago.
Many of the songs are from the era when music from Broadway shows and movie musicals was popular , Gallagher said.
"They know they are going to hear music that has made them feel happy in the past," he added, referring to its longtime audience members, which include many seniors. "They have memories from it."
The Performing Arts Society of Nevada is the umbrella organization for the Las Vegas Lyric Opera Company, the National Globe Theatre and Brown Bag Concerts.
"Broadway Meets the Movies" is part of the Performing Arts Society of Nevada's Broadway Series, which has included such productions as "Broadway meets Gershwin" and "Broadway Meets Cole Porter."
