Letter: Since Bush was elected, nation has melted down
Monday, June 24, 2002 | 9:04 a.m.
It is curious that our nation of flag wavers never took time to observe the end of our democracy and rule of law. Was it November 2000 when hundreds, maybe thousands of Floridians found themselves off the voting roles because their name or birthdate was similar to that of a felon? Was it December 2000 when the Supreme Court made a one-time ruling that it would harm George Bush's equal-protection rights for the public to know the true election returns?
The nation has melted down since that time. Sept. 11 happened because the government let it happen. The Minnesota FBI field office was presented one of the Sept. 11 hijackers with a complete explanation of what they could be planning. The FBI headquarters in Washington sabotaged the Minnesota field office's investigation. Under whose orders was this done? Why is there no outcry to find out?
Our economy is in continued recession. We are suffering massive theft from Social Security, and still the deficits and unemployment grow. The stock market is working its way back to September 2000 levels.
Now we find out that the executive branch of government can declare anyone a foreign combatant and hold him or her in prison forever with no charges. The absurd statement is made that we need to question them and not punish them, therefore we will hold them in prison indefinitely but not charge them with any crime. Surely no punishment there!
George W. Bush has, at the least, failed this country miserably.
