Second insurance hike sought

CARSON CITY -- The Doctors Company has asked state Insurance Commissioner Alice Molasky-Arman for permission to raise rates by $5.3 million a year for covering Nevada chiropractors.

The company said the statewide average increase would be 1.1 percent for Chiropractic Benefit Services Inc., its risk purchasing group.

Molasky-Arman said this comes on top of a previous application for 28 percent higher rates that was approved and is effective this month.

The insurance commissioner also said she has received applications from three other companies to enter the Nevada market to provide specialized coverage for medical personnel.

The National Union Fire Insurance Company of Pittsburgh wants to start covering psychiatrists for professional liability; the Podiatry Insurance Company of America wants to enter the market to write policies for podiatrists and PACO Assurance Co. wants permission to cover chiropractors.
