Catching up with: Kevin Gaines

Currently: Gaines, a transfer from Michigan recently cleared to play for the Cougars, has made an immediate impact for his new school. The 6-4 guard has started the team's past seven games, averaging 12.7 points, 4.7 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 steals since returning to the court. He was named Michigan's co-MVP as a freshman after averaging 11.7 points, 4.6 assists and 3.8 rebounds and starting 28 or 29 games for the Wolverines during the 1999-2000 season.

Looking back: One of the top basketball talents to come out of Nevada in the 1990s, Gaines earned the Sun's State Player of the Year award as a senior. Averaging 27 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in his final season, Gaines led the Chargers to an appearance in the 1999 4A state final four and earned a spot on the Parade All-America fourth team as a senior.
