Letter: Nevadans are bombarded by new expenses
Friday, Feb. 15, 2002 | 10:05 a.m.
Casino owners are savvy. In a crisis they have to cut overhead to survive. That's why I agree with their asking for lower property taxes. But what's good for the big boys should equally apply to us little people.
Politicians are out of touch with reality. If they would have to run a casino the first thing they would do is charge a quarter for the use of a urinal and put dollar slots on the doors of the toilets. Casino operators know that when they are in dire straights they can count on the locals with two-for-ones and such. Those golden oldies are a safety net for the casino. They provide traffic.
However, spendable income for locals has dwindled because of the increased cost to go to Lake Mead to go fishing, to take a short trip to Red Rock and let us not forget the skyrocketing utility bills. Since Pa & Ma Bell got divorced, the baby Bells are now part of an ever-confusing dysfunctional industry. But there is hope. Government needs to be cut to the bone. I disagree with people who say that politicians are stupid. They are not! Many amass huge amounts of cash, stocks and real estate while in office.
There should be some sort of DNA test that would set off alarms whenever lawmakers would enact unethical legislation! I have compassion for Uncle Sam. He needs mega doses of turkey rhubarb to get relief after many years of indigestion.
