Young to remain as senior justice
Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002 | 11:16 a.m.
CARSON CITY -- Justice Cliff Young, who is retiring from the Nevada Supreme Court after 18 years, will continue to serve as a senior justice.
Young, 80, said he will help out where needed, such as sitting on cases in which one of the justices might be disqualified, but he won't keep an office in the Supreme Court building.
"I don't think this justifies that," said the former congressman and state senator.
He said he might provide help on some of the pending cases.
He is being replaced by District Judge Mark Gibbons of Clark County, who ran unopposed for Young's seat.
Gibbons and Chief Justice Bill Maupin, who won re-election to a second term, will take the oath of office Monday.
Maupin said Young, as a senior judge, could continue to sign opinions on cases after he leaves office.
Young's new status will allow him to be part of the ruling on the appeal of Sandy Murphy, convicted of the killing of Las Vegas gaming figure Ted Binion. The court heard oral arguments June 27 and has yet to rule whether to overturn the murder conviction.
