Manslaughter guilty plea entered in brick-beating death

A Las Vegas man pleaded guilty Monday to beating two men with bricks, killing one and critically injuring the other.

Usman Sadiq, 19, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter with a deadly weapon and battery with a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm.

In exchange for Sadiq's guilty plea, prosecutors dismissed a charge of attempted murder with a deadly weapon.

Sadiq's sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 21. He was released from the Clark County Detention Center in April on a $100,000 bond.

District Judge Sally Loehrer asked Sadiq to tell her what he did to warrant his guilty plea.

"I got into a fight with two young men," he said. "They hit me a couple of times and I hit them a couple of times."

Prosecutors asked Loehrer to instruct Sadiq to include the fact that he beat the victims with a brick.

When asked by Loehrer if that was indeed true, Sadiq said "yes."

Police say Sadiq on Jan. 7 got into a fight with Kristopher Gregory, 21, and Jesse Covington, 24, after the two men sped through an apartment complex parking lot in a truck, striking Sadiq's brother and plowing through a block wall.

Gregory died at the scene. Covington was hospitalized with head and facial injuries.

The fight was captured on video by a self-proclaimed filmmaker who said he was making a documentary about life in urban neighborhoods.

Other people were involved in the brawl, but prosecutors don't know who they are, Deputy District Attorney David Schwartz said.
