Stoldal gets new post at Channel 8
Tue, Aug 27, 2002 (9:21 a.m.)
Bob Stoldal has been named vice president of news at KLAS Channel 8.
He will continue to be general manager of Las Vegas ONE, the all-news cable channel that broadcasts on Cox Channels 1 and 39.
In addition, Stoldal will oversee the creation of a newscast for KTUD Channel 25, the UPN station, which begins airing a 10 p.m. newscast on Sept. 9.
Stoldal has been a newspaperman, a radio announcer and a television news reporter and director.
Stoldal has been a television news director for more than 30 years in Nevada. During his tenure as news director at KLAS, United Press International honored the station for "Best Newscast in America."
In 1967 he was hired as a reporter and anchor at KLAS, then owned by newspaper publisher Hank Greenspun, who began printing the Las Vegas Sun in 1951. Stoldal was promoted to news director in June 1970, when billionaire Howard Hughes owned the station.
In January 1998 Stoldal became general manager of Las Vegas ONE. He launched the new local 24-hour news station four months later. His responsibilities were expanded Monday to include overseeing news operations at KLAS.
As news director at KLAS, Stoldal led the fight in Southern Nevada to allow public access to various courtroom and governmental proceedings by allowing television cameras to broadcast events.
As a result, the public has been able to see trials, inquests, Ethics Commission and Nevada Supreme Court hearings and other events, all live on Las Vegas ONE.
At Las Vegas ONE Stoldal broadcast the first criminal trial in Nevada and produced the first live coverage of pleadings before the Nevada Supreme Court, first in Las Vegas and later in Carson City.
