Hottest July ever

This July is the hottest one on record, National Weather Service forecaster Larry Jensen said at 1:30 this morning.

The record of 93.4 degrees average for the month is 43 years old and was set in both 1959 and 1989, Jensen said. Southern Nevada's official weather record dates from 1937.

The new record is 94.6 degrees. "That will be an all-time record," Jensen said.

As far as rainfall is concerned, the Las Vegas Valley is above average, thanks to 0.52 of an inch measured at McCarran International Airport on July 17, Jensen said. The average July rainfall is 0.44 of an inch.

"This July was probably one of our wetter months and it's in the middle of a drought," Jensen said, laughing. "It's not in the top 10, but this July was above normal."

For the rest of the week, temperatures will remain around normal, which is 104 degrees, and dry.
