Man sentenced in store arson

Thursday, April 18, 2002 | 8:39 a.m.

A 31-year-old Las Vegas man has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison and has been ordered to pay $463,000 in restitution for burning a convenience store two years ago.

Troy Sampson, 31, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge James Mahan Monday for the Nov. 14, 2000, arson at the Golden Market, 1735 N. Nellis Blvd.

Sampson was videotaped by store security cameras as he cut a hole in the store's roof, made his way inside and broke into video poker machines and an ATM.

Sampson is also on tape pouring lighter fluid around the store and lighting it in an attempt to destroy evidence of the burglary, a spokeswoman with the U.S. attorney's office said.
