Jan. 1: Kerrigan attacked
Story: In Detroit, figure skater Nancy Kerrigan let out a horrified scream and collapsed onto the floor. A man slammed something resembling a crowbar into her leg.
Jan. 17: Fires rage, freeways fall as 6.6 temblor hits SoCal
Story: A violent earthquake struck Southern California before dawn today, crumbling freeways into rubble, collapsing buildings with a savage power and igniting fires across a vast swath of the hazy, battered city of Los Angeles.
The quake, centered in the San Fernando Valley, knocked out power throughout much of the region and shook buildings from San Diego to Las Vegas. Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riorden and California Gov. Pete Wilson declared states of emergency.
May 20: Kennedy Onassis dies
Story: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is dead at age 64, and the nation has lost a true icon who filled an amazing number of roles in American myth and reality.
She died of lymph cancer at 10:15 p.m. EDT Thursday with her children, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg and John F. Kennedy Jr., and longtime companion Maurice Tempelsman, at her bedside, a family friend said.
June 14: O.J. runs into trouble
Story: Hours after his former wife and an acquaintance were found slain outside her luxury townhouse, former NFL star O.J. Simpson was questioned by police who searched his nearby estate and reportedly found a blood-stained glove.
A police source said the bloody glove found at Simpson's Brentwood estate, about two miles from the death scene, matched a glove found near the bodies. Blood stains spattered his driveway.
Aug. 12: Baseball dark today as sides get together
Story: Negotiators for baseball players and owners went back to the bargaining table today, hours after the American and National leagues officially canceled their games because of the player's strike.
Soon after their offices opened, the National League and the American Leagues said all 14 games scheduled for tonight were wiped out. The strikes threatens the final 52 days and 669 games of the regular season.
