First evaluation due for superintendent

Clark County School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia will undergo his first evaluation by the School Board before the end of June.

The actual overall score Garcia receives will be made public, although the School Board plans to keep private the detailed comments about the superintendent's job performance.

Scores will be used to determine the bonus and salary increase the superintendent receives, if any.

In order to calculate their scores, the board will use a worksheet designed by board President Mary Beth Scow and Maureen Fox, an administrative assistant in the superintendent's office.

Board member Shirley Barber, at Thursday night's School Board meeting, opposed the form, citing insufficient time to review it.

Garcia will be rated on a scale of one to three on nine different areas, according to the evaluation form.

A score of one will mean Garcia is not in compliance, a two means partial compliance and a three means his actions are in compliance.

The board's evaluation of Garcia will include how he has interacted with families and students and paid and volunteer staff. District finances and assets, and communication with the Board will also come under review.
