A.C. officials approve expansion of Tropicana

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Tropicana Casino and Resort's plan to add a 500-room hotel tower and a retail-entertainment complex has been unanimously approved by the Atlantic City Zoning Board.

The panel unanimously approved the $225 million project Thursday, despite strong objections from homeowners at the neighboring Brighton Towers Condominium. Residents there said they would likely challenge the approval in court.

The expansion would consist of an 18-story hotel tower and convention space built atop "The Latin Quarter," a complex of shops, nightclubs and restaurants and a 2,400-space parking garage.

No new casino space is included in the expansion. Tropicana still must receive final site plan approval from the zoning board and the City Council.

Officials said the project is expected to create 2,000 permanent new jobs and 1,700 construction jobs. They expect the project will be completed in the spring of 2003.
