Editorial: Wasting time can be a perilous journey

State lawmakers are back in Carson City today, attending a special session to wrap up business they couldn't finish when the regular session ended last week. Several lawmakers earlier this week had expressed concern that the Legislature might not be able to act on reapportionment and pass all the other bills on the agenda within a 24-hour time limit that Gov. Kenny Guinn had considered imposing.

Not only did Guinn eventually opt against a set time to finish by, but a tentative deal had been struck on reapportionment, lessening some of the pressure placed on legislators. But it would be unwise of them to view this as an opportunity to either lazily go about their business or engage in mischief. Legislators should remember that special sessions can be perilous journeys for their political careers, so they should avoid dawdling and political gamesmanship, and just do the job that they were elected to do.
