No bid made on BLM park land

Although the Clark County Commission hoped to sublease an acre of federal land at Desert Breeze Park for a farmer's market, nobody made an offer on Tuesday.

The property at Spring Mountain Road and Durango Drive could not be used for recreation, according to conditions set by the Bureau of Land Management, which owned the parcel.

Commissioner Erin Kenny said she had been approached by several people who considered selling fresh fruits and vegetables and crafts at the site.

The sublease called for a minimum bid of $27,500 to start a farmer's market once a week for six months over a year. The county received no written bids.

David Collins of Patagonia Co. signaled before the auction that he would submit an oral bid, but declined an offer.

Kenny then asked if the county could lease the property without an auction, but the District Attorney's Office said the county has to follow federal rules because the BLM owns the land.

County spokesman Doug Bradford said apparently federal conditions and the asking price dampened enthusiasm for a farmer's market.
