Help needed for fund-raiser
The Nevada Association For the Handicapped is seeking volunteers for their seventh annual "Playhouse" event, a fund-raiser featuring dinner, entertainment, dancing and a silent auction of children's playhouses.
The event will take place Oct. 13 at the Mirage. Those interested in volunteering should contact the group at 870-7050.
Nominations sought for award
The Epilepsy Foundation is seeking nominations for the Making a Difference Award, which honors women with epilepsy who have advanced the quality of life for other women with epilepsy or enhanced the public's understanding of the disability.
The winner will receive $1,500 and a trip to the Foundation's 2001 National Conference. Those wishing to nominate someone must submit a 300 word essay and a letter of recommendation by Sept. 10.
For more information, contact the Epilepsy Foundation, (800) EFA-1000.
Bank donates cash, computer equipment
MASH Village received $1,000 and computer equipment from Business Bank of Nevada on Friday.
Crisis Intervention Center Resource Room will be using the computer equipment to help find employment opportunities for homeless and at-risk homeless people.
It will also allow people to receive assistance in obtaining their General Educational Development (GED) certificate and job skills training.
The money will go to the Capital Development fund, which provides family apartments, kitchen and dining facilities and a licensed day care.
Children to get necessities
Children removed from their homes because of domestic violence or neglect will receive from the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services a backpack filled with new clothing, toiletries, towels, toys, books and other necessities.
The program, dubbed Project Backpack, was created by NA'AMAT USA (a Hebrew acronym for Working Women and Volunteers), an organization that works to advance the status of women in Isreal and combat domestic violence.
NA'AMAT USA will present about 100 filled backpacks to the Division of Child and Family Services at the NA'AMAT national convention at the Mirage Hotel today.
