Rates may rise in Pahrump

The volatile electricity market could shock the 11,500-member Valley Electric Association cooperative serving Pahrump.
The association, which acquires one-third of its power from hydroelectric dams on the Colorado River -- an inexpensive source -- but the rest on the spot market, will consider power cost adjustments to consumers.
"We have absolutely no way to quantify (how much bills would go up for consumers)," said Louis Holveck, general manager of the cooperative. "It's all dependent on the market."
