Waitress jumps off interstate overpass
A 39-year-old local waitress apparently despondent over money jumped from the Interstate 15 overpass at Tropicana Avenue this morning.
Metro Police received a 911 call at 6:55 a.m. and an officer arrived on the scene at 7 a.m., trying to talk the woman out of jumping, Officer Tirso Dominguez, a department spokesman, said.
The woman jumped onto I-15 at 7:04 a.m. and was taken to University Medical Center. She was listed in serious condition this morning.
Traffic on the interstate was shut down for only minutes, then several lanes were opened up, Trooper Alan Davidson, a Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman, said.
Traffic was snarled for at least an hour.
The woman told police she was upset about losing $3,000, but police did not know the circumstances surrounding the loss. The woman's name was not released.
Shooting victim, 18, is identified
An 18-year-old man killed when shots were fired at a party Friday night was identified this morning as Adrian Anaya.
Metro Police were called to the 4500 block of Elm Avenue in the area of Stewart Avenue and Lamb Boulevard about 11:45 p.m. Friday. Officers found Anaya and 21-year-old Cesar Arias shot. Both men were taken to University Medical Center. Anaya later died.
The shooting occurred at a house on Elm Avenue during a party. Detectives have few details about the shooter. The investigation is continuing.
No parole for Shellenbarger
The state Parole Board has rejected a request for freedom from Mike Shellenbarger, imprisoned in 1973 for killing two Tonopah prospectors.
Shellenbarger, 48, an Ely State Prison inmate, was told he could try again in 18 months.
Shellenbarger was convicted of the shooting deaths of Frank May and Louis Mayers. Both were shot in the head during a drinking bout that led to an argument over one victim's truck.
Released from prison in 1980, Shellenbarger was returned a year later because of a parole violation. He then fled from a work camp assignment and went on a crime spree in October 1981 before being recaptured.
Since then, he has been turned down repeatedly for parole.
