Letter: Rich pay more, so they deserve bigger tax break
Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001 | 9:53 a.m.
Well Brian Greenspun, I'm not so sure debating taxes with your wife is in your best interest. But if living dangerously excites you, here is my idea. Argue the facts -- the top 1 percent income group pays 35 percent of all income taxes, the top 10 percent pays 65 percent, the top 25 percent pays 83 percent.
When you cut income taxes you can't avoid helping these upper income groups, because they are the ones who pay all the taxes. The bottom 50 percent income group pays only 4 percent of all income taxes. They get their government for free.
This is a gigantic transfer of wealth from the most productive citizens, to the black hole of waste and corruption that is the federal government.
The Democrats vilify the productive citizens as evil and greedy because they only pay 30 percent of their income in taxes; the only way to get 30 percent of someone's income is if they have a large income. Government couldn't take 30 percent from everyone lest there be a tea party.
