UNLV notebook: Rebels compete in tennis tourney
Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 | 10:04 a.m.
The UNLV men's tennis team boasts two entries that opened play today at the exclusive Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Dallas.
Serving as the third leg of the Collegiate Grand Slam, the event will run through Sunday at the Brookhaven Country Club and is hosted by Southern Methodist University.
The field is the most exclusive of the college tennis season as the draws are half the size of other tournaments -- just 32 for singles and 16 for doubles.
Nenad Zivkovic, ranked 54th, will take on 12th-ranked Nathan Overholser of Florida in the first round of singles play.
In doubles, Zivkovic and partner Gregor Skorin, both of whom are seniors from Belgrade, Serbia, will face unranked Kyle Kliegerman and John Portlock of Princeton.
Zivkovic and Skorin, who are ranked 21st nationally, earned a berth in the event by winning the ITA Region VII Championships, which were held on the UNLV campus last fall.
Zivkovic qualified by being the singles runner-up at the same event.
The Rebels will host the Cougars at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Wilson Stadium. Both games will be broadcast live on KSHP AM-1400.
