Metro Police released the name of the officer who shot a woman during a confrontation in a home Tuesday night.
Officer Lawrence Gibson, 30, shot Anna Gavigan, 28, once in the stomach after, police say, the woman turned on Gibson and another officer in a house in the 3800 block of Birchview Court near Tenaya Way and Twain Avenue.
Gibson, an officer for three years, and another officer were called to the house about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday after Gavigan was in the front yard with a knife threatening to hurt herself, police said.
Gavigan, who has a history of mental illness, ran into the house after the officers tried to get her to drop the knife. Gavigan then apparently hurt herself with the knife and then went at the officers, police said.
Gibson and the other officer backed up until they hit a wall in the house. Gibson fired one shot when Gavigan continued to come at the officers, police said.
Gavigan was listed in good condition this morning at University Medical Center.
Gibson was put on administrative leave with pay after the shooting, department policy after officer-involved shootings.
