Letter: Bush, GOP fight only for the wealthy
Friday, Dec. 14, 2001 | 9:34 a.m.
Almost lost in the battle about the attack on America is the struggle about the income tax.
President Bush and the Republicans are fighting to get the rich some extra take-home money. They want to accelerate the unfortunate tax cut already legislated. This acceleration will give the rich the biggest boost -- in fact a big, big one. The not-wealthy will get some scrimpy leftovers.
Sen. Tom Daschle and the Democratic leadership in the Senate are putting up a valiant effort to halt the Republican sought-for legislation. They want to keep that earlier tax cut unlocked in the event the funds are needed to help, economically, those citizens in need.
There is no doubt that the president and the Republicans have left their hearts with the wealthy.
