In 1894 Congress, declared the first Monday in September as the legal holiday of Labor Day, but Labor Day has been observed since the 1840s, when the Knights of Labor began holding a September parade in New York City. Canada also observes the holiday in honor of all wage earners. Here's what's open and closed on Monday:
