Nevada Senate OK’s abandoned babies measure
Wednesday, April 18, 2001 | 10:05 a.m.
SB115 moved Tuesday to the state Assembly.
The bill by Sen. Ray Rawson, R-Las Vegas, is similar to laws in 14 states. It would create safe havens where parents can turn babies over to doctors, firefighters and other emergency centers. They must leave the baby with a person, not on a doorstep.
Lawmakers were told about 200 babies are abandoned every year in the United States, with about one-third of the babies dying, often in trash bins. An infant named Baby Boy Atlantic was found dead earlier this year in a Las Vegas trash bin.
