Columnist Ron Kantowski: Is Robinson really right for Rebels?

Ron Kantowski's column appears Thursday. His notes column appears Tuesday. Reach him at [email protected] or 259-4088.

Consider this column a retraction of what I said in December of 1998, when UNLV named John Robinson its new head football coach. If I recall -- and only after careful deliberation -- I gave his hiring a subtle thumbs up.

The "savior of the program" is the way I think I put it.

But upon further review, it's now safe to say that Robinson is not the right man for the job. To wit:

* Back in the Big Wurst -- er, West -- days, you could go to Sam Boyd Stadium on an unseasonably warm November afternoon and get a heck of a suntan at a UNLV-New Mexico State game by lying down across the virtually empty aluminum bleachers. Now, the darn stadium is three-quarters filled, making it impossible to stretch out and catch a nap during the second quarter.

So, as you can see, I've really got no use for John Robinson. He can take his winning record, lofty power rating, bowl game aspirations, potential for the future and enthusiasm for his job somewhere they could really use it. Like Southern Cal, for instance.

Because if this keeps up, I'm gonna have no choice but to start following Ball State.
