Federal funds awarded to deal with issue of domestic violence

The funds are given to groups and organizations that specifically target coordination of statewide law enforcement and prosecution strategies to combat violent crimes against women.

Funds also are awarded to assist in developing and enhancing governmental and private advocacy programs that aid such victims, said Del Papa, who is chairwoman of the Nevada Domestic Violence Prevention Council.

Forty-five people - one-third of all people murdered in the state - were killed last year during domestic violence incidents.

More than 18,000 reports of battery were made to police agencies and 62,000 calls were made by people to domestic crisis hot lines.
