Vegas Vic gets makeover
Wednesday, May 17, 2000 | 10:13 a.m.
Vegas Vic has had some much-needed surgery and is almost back to his old self.
The 40-foot high neon cowboy has presided over downtown Las Vegas for 50 years, but Vic's clothes were faded and some of his lights weren't working. In his heyday, Vic towered over Fremont Street, directing customers into the Pioneer Club.
Since the massive Fremont Street Experience canopy opened in 1995, Vic hasn't looked as dominating, but still remains one of the most familiar landmarks of old Las Vegas.
Vegas Vic's neon tubing has been repaired or replaced and his clothing has been given a fresh coat of paint, Vic's owner, Schiff Enterprises, said Tuesday.
His voice box was fixed, and his booming "Howdy Partner," is once again being heard on Fremont Street.
Schiff Enterprises said Vic's restoration will be complete after a few more coats of paint.
