LV grocery operator in Internet deal

Shoppers at Smith's Food & Drug Stores in Las Vegas will be able to name their own price for groceries purchased online by the end of this month.

Smith's parent, Kroger Co., signed an agreement with Priceline WebHouse Club, a division of online company priceline.com. Under the agreement, consumers who buy groceries online from a Kroger-owned store can choose two or more national brands from each category, and find out in less than a minute if their prices have been accepted.

Consumers lock-in their prices by pre-paying with a credit card while online. Before logging off, customers print out a pre-paid grocery list they take with them to a participating supermarket. At the checkout counter, the customer's WebHouse Club card is then swiped to complete the process.

Smith's currently operates 14 stores in Metro Las Vegas; Kroger-owned Pricerite Grocery Warehouse operates four Las Vegas stores that will be included in the online initiative later this year.
