Nevadans in Congress part of flurry of activity

WASHINGTON -- Members of Congress were busy this week on the floor and at press conferences, pushing legislation and making deals before they leave Washington today for a traditional August break -- and campaigning. Congress returns Sept. 5, then adjourns for the year in October.

Berkley's plan also would establish grants for dropout programs.

Berkley said she was optimistic her plan would stand up to anti-bureaucracy sentiment in the Republican-controlled House.

"We have a venue -- and that's the Department of Education -- which actually can have an impact on the lives of these kids," Berkley said.

"This legislation will correct flaws in America's current immigration policy, which have separated families and denied individuals the ability to apply for legal immigration status," Reid said.

Reid has tried to push bills that ban courts from hearing cases of immigrants -- once estimated at 18,000 in Nevada -- who say bureaucratic paperwork snafus and other unfair complications cost them their right to work and ultimately stay in the United States. He has also asked Department of Justice to analyze the Nevada cases and devise a solution in cases of fraud.
