Ex-UNLV student sues over car crash

A former UNLV student has filed a negligence lawsuit against the university and an assistant men's basketball coach claiming his car was wrecked because of them.

Former Rebels student manager Michael Viellion states in his lawsuit that when he went on a brief vacation in July 1998 he left his 1995 Ford Thunderbird Coupe in the care of assistant coach Glynn Cyprien.

Cyprien then loaned the car to basketball player Kaspars Kambala, who wrecked the car, the lawsuit states. Kambala was also named in the suit.

As a result, Viellion claims he has had to pay impound and storage fees and increased auto insurance premiums.

According to the suit, which was filed Wednesday in District Court, Viellion is seeking unspecified damages.

Candidate unveils plan for seniors

U.S. Senate candidate John Ensign unveiled his senior security plan that he says will benefit Nevada's senior citizens when it comes to medical needs.

The plan calls for discounts on prescriptions for seniors, the right for seniors to choose their own health plan and doctors and allows faster access to the latest medicines.

Ensign says his plan is the product of years of town hall meetings and research and visiting with senior citizens from all parts of Nevada.

For more information on Ensign's plan seniors can call (888) 764-8646 and speak to one of his campaign volunteers.

NLV Police taking applications

The North Las Vegas Police Department is accepting applications for its upcoming citizen's academy.

The academy is held on 11 consecutive Wednesdays from Aug. 30 through Nov. 15 for about three hours each session. Police said the purpose of the academy is to provide citizens a first-hand look about how the department operates.

Classes include demonstrations by SWAT, information about the criminal justice system, crime prevention, domestic violence, use of force and other police-related topics.

The academy is free, but applicants must be at least 18 years old and pass a limited criminal background investigation. Those interested can get more information about the academy and an application by contacting Shawn Andrews at 633-1741.
