Instead, industry leaders said they will concentrate their efforts on defeating a competing initiative aimed at curbing billboards in the city.
The industry's petition would have allowed billboards in commercial and industrial areas. Under existing ordinances, they are only allowed in industrial zones.
A group called Citizens for a Scenic Reno is circulating a petition to prohibit any new billboards. The 278 already in existence would be allowed to remain.
Many voters were confused by the dueling petition drives and complained they didn't know which one they were signing.
