Letter: Pigeon cruelty is unnecessary
Tuesday, July 18, 2000 | 9:42 a.m.
To ease the "pigeon problem" Las Vegas plans to trap the pigeons first, then hire some maladjusted characters to systematically wring the necks of thousands of these birds. This is not from a Stephen King horror novel, folks -- this is reality.
This plan just hit the Los Angeles newspapers and also the Chicago Tribune, and my friends and relatives have my phone ringing off the hook. They are shocked and appalled and once again are asking me "how can you stand to live in Las Vegas?" I'm beginning to wonder myself.
Isn't it odd that Chicago, a "real" city, has managed to co-exist with pigeons for a hundred years -- yet it was just voted the cleanest downtown area in the country? If this unnecessary cruelty disgusts you, please voice your protests to City Hall -- 229-6011.
