DMV late with car registration renewals

CARSON CITY -- Some car owners have found themselves with only days to re-register their vehicles after a delay in sending out registration renewals.
The state Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety had to delay mailing of registration renewals for motorists whose registration expired between Dec. 23 and Jan. 5. American Decal, the Chicago company that supplies the decals that indicate the expiration, did not provide the stickers in time for the agency to process the registrations.
As a result, the notices went out late, leaving many motorists insufficient time to mail in their renewals.
Kim Evans, spokeswoman for the department, urged car owners to renew by the Internet or phone to get their new decals quickly.
No late fees will be assessed for motorists whose registrations expire between Dec. 23 and Jan. 5. Evans said those motorists also would not be cited by the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Metro Police, however, have not received any requests from state officials not to ticket drivers with expired registrations, Lt. Marc Joseph, a department spokesman, said.
