Pedestrians injured in LV Strip accident

Four people walking on Las Vegas Boulevard Wednesday night were hit when a car drove up on the sidewalk, leaving one in critical condition.

Juanita Kim McDonald, 24, of Las Vegas, was arrested on four counts of felony DUI substantial bodily harm. She is being held without bond in the Clark County Detention Center.

McDonald had work cards to work at Cheetahs adult nightclub.

The accident occurred around 7:28 p.m. on Las Vegas Boulevard south of Bellagio Drive in front of the new Aladdin hotel-casino when a car driving in the right lane drove up onto the sidewalk striking four pedestrians from behind. All four of the victims were taken to University Medical Center.

Mike Wienkes, 36, of Mineral Point, Wis., was listed this morning in critical condition. Alicia Cross, 24, of Beverly, Maine, was listed in fair condition.

The two other victims, Gene Dewulf, 48, of Acworth, Ga., and John Bonham, 48, town of residence not released, were treated and released.

"It is very unusual when pedestrians are hit on the Strip. It is usually very safe on the Strip," Metro Detective Rick Hart said. "Ninety percent of auto accidents involving pedestrians occur in nontourist areas."

There have been eight pedestrian fatalities in Las Vegas so far this year, Hart said. "There were 32 last year, of which only one or two occurred on the Strip."
