UNLV golf coach, two players honored by WAC

LIVERMORE, Calif. -- The top-ranked UNLV men's golf team was the most honored group at the WAC Championship as the conference awards were handed out.

Head Coach Dwaine Knight was named the Western Athletic Conference's Golf Coach of the Year, while senior Bill Lunde and sophomore Jeremy Anderson made the All-WAC Team.

Knight, who last won a conference Coach of the Year award when he was named Co-Big West Coach of the Year in 1989, has guided the Rebels to six wins this season, which is the highest-ever win total by a UNLV golf team. The Rebels also have been the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation since November.

UNLV was the only school with more than one player named to the All-WAC Team.

Lunde, the Rebels lone senior, finished second at the WAC Championship and has finished in the top-10 in six events.

Anderson, who was named the College Golf Foundation's National Golfer of the Month for November and two-time WAC Player of the Week, has won two tournaments this season.

Other members of the All-WAC team include Brigham Young sophomore Andy Miller, Colorado State senior Scott Mendelsohn, New Mexico senior Doug La Belle, SMU junior Hank Kuehne, TCU senior J.J. Henry, Utah freshman Brock Padilla, UTEP senior Derrick Pursley and Tulsa senior Michael Boyd. Robby Stephenson of Colorado State was named Freshman of the Year, while Henry was named Player of the Year.
