Judge rejects request to seize assets of former showman

U.S. District Judge Philip Pro Wednesday denied the request by Jeanne Roush, former executive director of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Roush claimed Berosini and his wife are concealing their assets and avoiding court-ordered payments to her and PETA. The Berosinis deny the allegations.

The case dates back to the late 1980s when Berosini claimed PETA members doctored and distributed a videotape of him striking his performing orangutans.

He sued and received a $3.1 million judgment against PETA, but the state Supreme Court reversed that judgment. In 1996, District Judge Nancy Becker awarded $367,650 in legal fees to PETA and another $50,000 to the Performing Animal Welfare Society.

The Berosinis are appealing that ruling.
