Yet another bid to save the Mapes

QM Construction of Sparks unveiled a proposal on Tuesday to buy the hotel from the city and spend $22 million to turn the second through the ninth floors of the historic building into time-share units.

The first floor and a mezzanine would be converted into stores, restaurants, a day care facility and a gymnasium while the Sky Room on the top floor would become a cocktail lounge.

It's one of the most involved plans yet to stave off the wrecking ball. City Council was to have pondered a final decision on Monday, but now has postponed the latest deadline until early June.

City Manager Charles McNeely stressed the tentativeness of the plan.

"It's still a proposal. There is still a lot of work tht has to be done on this," he said.

The Mapes was Nevada's tallest building when it opened in December 1947. Its unique art deco style earned it a listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, two years after it was shut down and boarded up.
