Each Wednesday in May is senior open house with cards and other games and special events from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On May 6, there will be a 1.p. video-showing of "Contact" with Jodie Foster. At 10 a.m. May 13, Alan Simmons, associate professor of anthropology at UNLV, will discuss the prehistoric extinction of pygmy hippos on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus as a case study of the possible role of early humans in the extinctions of many prehistoric creatures around the world. A pot luck luncheon will be conducted at noon on May 20. At 10 a.m. May 27, CCSN English professor John Esperian will show slides he took last year in Armenia and explain what life is like today in that former USSR country.

Two field trips are scheduled for May. Signups for May and June trips have begun and the trips fill quickly. On May 8, will be a trip to UNLV to tour its desert landscape garden and through many of the non-desert trees and shrubs suitable for Southern Nevada. It will be led by UNLV's landscape, grounds and Arboretum staff. The trip fee is #2. On May 22, geologist Robert Needham leads a trip to Crystal Pass to find some of that area's famous orthoclase crystals. The trip fee is $3.

On June 5 Needham leads a trip to Mount Charleston and Lee Canyon is search of evidence of glaciers. The trip fee is $3. On June 17, a trip to Spring Mountain Ranch State Park to see the musical "Damn Yankees" is scheduled. The trip is $5.

May 28 is the deadline to register for a July 8 overnight trip to the Cedar City Shakespearean festival. Participants will see "The Taming of the Shrew" and "King John." The $130 trip fee covers transportation, tickets to both plays and a room (double occupancy).
