SUN STAFF REPORTS
Chip Hale's two-run single highlighted a five-run outburst by Memphis in the eighth inning as the Redbirds rallied for a 5-3 victory Tuesday over the Las Vegas Stars.
Las Vegas starter Stan Spencer had given up just two hits and struck out 12 through seven innings, but gave up singles to Mike Stefanski and Reed Secrist to open the eighth.
Alan Newman (0-1) came on in relief, gave up a single to Vince Coleman, then an RBI single by Luis Ordaz for the Redbirds' first run.
Newman struck out the next two batters, then Hale singled to tie the game.
Brian Tollberg relieved Newman and allowed up consecutive RBI singles to Brian Rupp and pinch-hitter Roberto Mejia.
Rusty Meacham (1-1) got the win despite allowing two runs in his only inning, the seventh.
The Stars' Greg LoRocca extended his hitting streak to 11 games by going 3-of-5.
