Obituaries for April 29, 1998

Richard Anderson, 60, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. He was born Oct. 4, 1937, in Albany, Ore. A resident for nearly 20 years, he was a retired air traffic control supervisor and an Air Force veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Jacki; three sons, Eric Anderson and Greg Anderson, both of Tempe, Ariz., and Mike Anderson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two daughters, Deann Divers of North Las Vegas and Julie Herrmann of Las Vegas; his mother, Violet Gredig of Las Vegas; one brother, Larry Anderson of Wichita, Kan.; and one granddaughter.

Visitation will begin 10 a.m. Thursday in Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Bunkers Chapel. A private burial will follow.

SHARRON KAY ARROYO

Sharron Kay Arroyo, 51, of Las Vegas died Sunday in Las Vegas. She was born June 15, 1946, in Utah. A resident for 47 years, she was a factory worker for a furniture firm.

She is survived by her father, Kenneth Garn of Boulder City; her mother, Virginia Garn of Las Vegas; two sons Ronnie Bishop and Johnny Bishop, both of Connecticut; two daughters, Tammy Washington of Las Vegas and Danna Bishop of Florida; one brother, Michael Garn, and two sisters, Linda Frei and Sandy Gonzales, all of Las Vegas; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Echoes of Faith, 1401 E. Washington Ave. Burial will be private. Hites Funeral Services, 438 W. Sunset Road, Henderson, is handling arrangements.

MARY LOUISE CELLA

Mary Louise Cella, 76, of Las Vegas died Friday in a local hospital. She was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Chicago. A resident for 14 years, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by three sons, Donald Moll of Flossmoor, Ill., Joseph Moll of Las Vegas and David Cella of Riverside, Calif.; one daughter, Sharon Melton of Las Vegas; one brother, Harry Pawlowski of Chicago; two sisters, Lottie Zbierski of LaGrange, Ill., and LaRene Koscielski of Chicago; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Burial will be in Riverside. Davis Funeral Home, 2127 W. Charleston Blvd., is handling arrangements.

RICHARD H. GEERTSEMA

Richard H. Geertsema, 77, of Las Vegas died April 22 in a local hospice. He was born July 11, 1920, in Blue Point, N.Y. A resident for 54 years, he was a retired accountant for the U.S. Treasury Department, a World War II Army Air Corps heavy bomber pilot, the originator of the First Presbyterian Church of Las Vegas and the originator of a Boy Scouts of America troop sponsored by the church.

He is survived by his wife, Maude; one daughter, Vicki G. Brende of Las Vegas; one sister, Evelyn Dobbs of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2:15 p.m. Friday in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City. Nevada Funeral Service-Nevada Cremation or Burial Society, 2121 Western Ave., Suite A-3, is handling arrangements.

ROBERT JAMES HERNANDEZ

Robert James Hernandez, 60, of Las Vegas died April 22 in Las Vegas. He was born June 1, 1937, in Honolulu. A resident for two years, he was a hotel steward.

He is survived by three brothers, Michael Hernandez of Honolulu, Charles Carpenter of Riverside, Calif., and Daryl Carpenter of Elk Grove, Calif.; and three sisters, Ann Valdez of Lincoln, Calif., Dorothy Sarcedo of Honolulu and Audrey Decaires of Las Vegas.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at 2815 Johannson Lane. Davis Funeral Home, 2127 W. Charleston Blvd., is handling arrangements.

KATHERINE HILEMAN

Katherine Hileman, 96, of Las Vegas died April 20 in a local hospital. She was born Oct. 14, 1901, in Ambler, Pa. A resident for 4 1/2 years, she was retired and was a homemaker.

She is survived by four sons, Col. John T. Hileman of Las Vegas, William S. Hileman of Athlone, Ireland, James E. Hileman of Prosser, Wash., and Frank C. Hileman of Akron, Ohio; two daughters, Nancy H. Younger of San Diego and Mary Lou Stewart of Las Vegas; 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Services were in Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Burial will be Thursday in Royal Palm Cemetery, St. Petersburg, Fla.

WILLIAM OWEN HINSON SR.

William Owen Hinson Sr., 69, of Henderson died Monday in a local care center. He was born April 19, 1929, in Greenville, Ala. A resident for 20 years, he was a retired insurance agent and a World War II Navy veteran.

He is survived by two sons, William Owen Hinson Jr. and Brian C. Hinson, both of Las Vegas; his daughter, Melissa Richardson of Henderson; his mother, Clara Hinson, and one sister, Emily Richardson, both of Montgomery, Ala.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service date is pending. Affordable Cremation and Burial Service, 2457 N. Decatur Blvd., is handling arrangements.

NORBERT W. HOFFMANN

Norbert W. Hoffmann, 66, of North Las Vegas died Monday in a local hospital. He was born June 14, 1931, in Chicago. A resident for 3 1/2 years, he was a retired bookstore owner, a Korean War Air Force veteran, a Little League coach for 30 years and a high school baseball coach, both in Chicago.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; one son, Gary Hoffman of Covington, La.; three daughters, Kathy Tollman of Naperville, Ill., Shery Hoffman of Providence, R.I., and Bonny Wilgus of Lexington, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10:45 a.m. Friday in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City. Affordable Cremation and Burial Service, 2457 N. Decatur Blvd., is handling arrangements.

ARTHUR LEE JOHNSON

Arthur Lee Johnson, 51, of Las Vegas died Friday in Las Vegas. He was born Feb. 19, 1947, in California. A resident for many years, he was a car detailer.

He is survived by one daughter, Anne Mae Williams, and his mother, Anne Bell Williams, both of California; and three sisters, Jessie Mae Hardy of Las Vegas, Gladys Pettis of California and Willie Mae Evans of Kansas.

ANNA MARIE KOPAZ

Anna Marie Kopaz, 63, of Las Vegas died Friday in Las Vegas. She was born Jan. 24, 1935, in Philadelphia. A resident for nine years, she was a homemaker, a member of the Rosary Guild at St. Anne Catholic Church and a beloved wife and mother.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas J. Sr.; five sons, Thomas J. Kopaz Jr. of Las Vegas, Joseph I. Kopaz and Patrick J. Kopaz, both of New Jersey, and Martin B. Kopaz and Robert C. Kopaz, both of Florida; three sisters, Shirley M. Mills of Pennsylvania and Kathleen J. Eby and Patricia J. Hreha, both of Nevada; two brothers, Joseph R. Haines of New Jersey and John F. Haines of Nevada; and nine grandchildren.

FRANCIS ROBERT KRAVERATH

Francis Robert Kraverath, 62, of Las Vegas died April 16 in a local hospital. He was born June 23, 1935, in Queens, N.Y. A resident for 25 years, he was an electrician for 35 years.

He is survived by one daughter, Carly Kraverath of Las Vegas; one brother, Tom Ayres of Leesburg, Fla.; and one niece, Carol Dein of Henderson.

EILEEN D. LEWIS

Eileen D. Lewis, 75, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. She was born June 30, 1922, in Corydon, Iowa. A resident for 69 years, she was a retired owner-operator of a refrigeration company.

She is survived by her husband, George; one daughter, Margaret Riffle of Mesa, Ariz.; three sons, Patrick Lewis of Las Vegas, Vincent Lewis of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Timothy Lewis of St. George, Utah; two sisters, Dorothy Dubovik of Las Vegas and Mary Ellen Davis of Mesquite; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will continue until 7 p.m. today in Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Palm Chapel, Eastern. Burial will follow in Palm Valley View Memorial Park.

JOHN LOKEN

John Loken, 47, of Las Vegas died Saturday in Las Vegas. He was born March 5, 1951, in Salt Lake City. A resident for 43 years, he was a dealer.

He is survived by his mother, Else Loken; one brother, Harold Loken; and one sister, Kari Bloomquist.

JOHN CHARLES LONG

John Charles Long, 79, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. He was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Chicago. A resident for 46 years, he was a World War II Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Agnes H.; four sons, John M. Long and Gene Long, both of Ojai, Calif., Jim Long of Phoenix and John Long of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; one daughter, Nancy Long of Davis, Calif.; two stepsons, Hoagy O. Cannon of St. Louis and Guy Cannon of Las Vegas; two stepdaughters, Michelle Swickard of Newport Beach, Calif., and Geri Thomas of Chicago; three sisters, Virginia Rossi of Simi Valley, Calif., Helen Dunne of New York City and Mary Boyajian of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Davis Paradise Valley Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Ave.

HARRY MARSHALL

Harry Marshall, 86, of Las Vegas died Saturday in a local hospice. He was born Dec. 10, 1911, in Indiana. A resident for 35 years, he was a retired Air Force veteran, an employee of the Las Vegas Parks Department for 15 years, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and retired Sergeants Association.

He is survived by his wife, Hildegard; and one sister, Maxine Abernathy of Milwaukee.

Burial will be in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City. Desert Memorial Cremation and Burial Society, 1111 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is handling arrangements.

MAX MILGROM

Max Milgrom, 98, of Las Vegas died Monday in a local care center. He was born March 16, 1900, in Opoler, Poland. A resident for 25 years, he owned and operated a women's shoe manufacturing company.

He is survived by one daughter, Ghita Shaw of Las Vegas; one son, Robert Milgrom of New York City; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.

DOROTHY J. OWEN

Dorothy J. Owen, 66, of Las Vegas died Monday in a local hospital. She was born July 4, 1931, in Bishop, Calif. A resident for 26 years, she was a retired insurance adjuster/secretary, a member of the Insurance Women's Association and the Eastern Star in Bishop, Calif.

She is survived by her husband, Donald; one daughter, Cynthia Kim of Las Vegas; one son, John P. Owen of Pahrump; one sister, Margaret Reynolds of Bishop; and one grandchild.

Helen Victoria Payne, 92, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. She was born Aug. 29, 1905, in Cody, Neb. A resident for 18 years, she was an employee at Natrona County High School, Casper, Wyo., and a member of Daughters of the Nile.

She is survived by three daughters, Betty Brown and Eileen Ottmann, both of Las Vegas, and Bonnie Moriarty of Fayetteville, N.C.; one sister, Frances Erickson of Martin, S.D.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 6-8 p.m. today in Davis Paradise Valley Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Ave. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Davis Paradise Valley Funeral Home.

RAYMOND 'RICHARD' ROBERTSON

Raymond "Richard" Robertson, 37, of Sparta, Mo., died Thursday. He was born June 18, 1960, in Las Vegas.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Joyce Roberts Hutchins and Roger Hutchins of Ozark, Mo.; one brother, Donald Robertson of Battlefield, Mo.; and other relatives and friends.

MARLEEN RAE SHERAR

Marleen Rae Sherar, 61, of Las Vegas died Thursday in Las Vegas. She was born June 14, 1936, in San Diego. A resident for five years, she was a machinist at Allied Signa Corp., Alameda, Calif.

She is survived by her husband, Warren L.; one stepson, Kevin L. Sherar, and one stepdaughter, Judy Sherar, both of San Diego; one brother, Richard Johnson of California; and five grandchildren.

HAROLD A. 'SONNY' SMITH JR.

Harold A. "Sonny" Smith Jr., 59, of Henderson died Saturday in a local hospital. He was born June 2, 1938, in Sedalia, Mo. A resident for 30 years, he was a steel fabricator in the construction industry.

He is survived by one daughter, Loraine Smith; three sons, Larry Leroy Smith, Neil Smith and Steven Smith; three sisters, Barbara Kirk of Ketchum, Okla., Shirley Zamora of Las Vegas and Sandra Lou Jensen of California; and one brother, Donald J. Smith of Las Vegas.

Clifford "Moon" Whitmore, 54, of Las Vegas died Sunday in Las Vegas. He was born Oct. 21, 1943, in Louisiana. A longtime resident, he was a construction worker and a Navy veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Willie B.; three sons, Michael Whitmore, Mario Whitmore and Ricky Whitmore; three daughters, Sandra Weatherspoon, Cynthia Weatherspoon and Tanya Weatherspoon; two brothers, Orlando Whitmore and Dwane Whitmore; two sisters, Debbie Whitmore and Martha Wooten; and 17 grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 3-7 p.m. Sunday in New Horizon Funeral Home, 2610 E. Lake Mead Blvd., North Las Vegas. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in New Horizon Funeral Home. Burial will be in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City.
