Newspaper, state demographer have different population numbers

Judson's formula pegs the population at 19,295. That's almost 8,000 fewer than the newspaper's tally of 26,955, which would be an increase of 3,348 new residents over the past year.

Judson says Pahrump won't hit 26,955 until some time in 2003.

The paper takes the number of residential telephones in the valley from Nevada Bell and multiplies that number by 3. Not included are cell phones, business phones, homes with more than one phone line or ones with no phone line at all.
