Columnist Peter Benton: Low golf scores highlight Nevada State Seniors event

PETER BENTON is a local golfer. His column appears Wednesdays.

THE NEVADA STATE Seniors Golf Club's recent three-day, two-man tournament in Lake Havasu, Ariz., featured scores that were much lower than the norm.

In the first flight, low gross went to Moe Winter and Howard Wieland with a score of 289. Larry McGovern and Larry Turner were next at 309 followed by Joe Stanley and Gerald Boggess at 317.

Low-net honors in the first flight went to Bill Gearin and Lefty Nordhill's 268. Second with scores of 272 were Ron Whitecliff/Kelly Carton and Sammy Lee/Bill Youngs.

Second-flight low-gross victors were Dave Maddux and John Stransky. Their 325 beat Howard Peiffer and Ron Schmitz, who came in with 333. John Wakefield and Glen Kruggel were third at 340.

Net winners in the second flight were John Frazzetta and Larry Morgan, whose 261 edged Phil Ansuini/Ted DeGuisne and Tom Rogers/Phill Bangs. Their scores were 266 and 275, respectively.

Neil Radermacher and Bernie Eubank's 337 took low-gross honors in the third flight. They were followed by Larry Mlynek and Phil Mlynek at 341 while Barney Barnes/Jim Hironaka had 343.

Winning low net with a fine score of 256 was the Dave Tilton/Frank Davis duo, followed by Ralph Leigon/Merle Coombs (259) and John Jakobe/John Reible (264).

Picks revisited

Okay, so maybe my selections for last week's Las Vegas Senior Classic were not as good as previous years.

However, they were not that bad, either:

Larry Nelson, who was my No. 1 pick, finished tied for 10th place; Hale Irwin, my second choice, repeated as champion; Gil Morgan, chosen third, finished 20th.

Tom Wargo, my fourth choice, placed 16th while Dave Stockton, who followed in my selections, came in tied at 24th.

David Graham, sixth on my list, placed seventh. Vicente Fernandez, my seventh selection, placed second after a terrific final round of 4-under 68. Graham Marsh, my next choice, came in sixth.
